The Apostle is an unfinished, three-act drama about an imagined meeting of an elderly Jesus and the apostle Paul at a monastery where Jesus is a monk. The hybrid play and scenario was published to protect the concept from use by other writers. George Moore himself further developed it in his novel The Brook Kerith (1916) and play The Passing of the Essenes (1930).
Publication of The Apostle coincided with a renewal of Moore’s exile in England after his decade in Ireland as a contributor to the Irish Literary Revival. During that time he argued against the influence of his family’s religion, Roman Catholicism, in Irish culture. His drama exposes the conflict between the values and ethics of Jesus and the emerging Christian faith.
