When George Moore adapted his 49-chapter novel Esther Waters (1894) to form a five-act play, he compressed 142,000 words of prose narrative into 29,000 words of clipped dialogue. The size and pace of the story changed along with the mode of storytelling, but those are not the only differences. Significant details of plot and chararater evolved to suit the stage and also to update creative choices almost twenty years after they were originally made.

The play was produced by the Stage Society at the Apollo Theatre in London on 10 and 11 December 1911. The playbill is appended to the Preface of the book, along with the author’s critical appreciation of actors and his thanks to “my old friend” George Bernard Shaw for promoting the play.
