In the “Spent Love” chapter of Memoirs of My Dead Life (1906) George Moore recalled Edouard Manet giving him this portrait of his girlfriend Madame Albazi [sic]. “She was dark as a raven and I was as gold as a sunflower.”
The gift was first commemorated in “The Portrait,” one of George’s Pagan Poems (1881).
Biographer Joseph Hone doesn’t mention Albazzi. Biographer Adrian Frazier gives her name as Iza Kiatowski (Izabela Kwiatkowski?) and describes her anonymous evocation in Moore’s poetry, but doesn’t share her biographical details.
I haven’t found her on the Internet under any of the possible names. Still looking.
