Overlooking the Carrowbeg River, about one mile from Westport House, George Moore wrote from Westport Lodge 1915-1917. He was there visiting his friend and former property manager Thomas Fair Ruttledge (1855-1925), who owned the Lodge until his death.

Constructed in the early 1800s, the Lodge was sold in 1925 and converted into the Sacred Heart School.

James Arthur O’Connor’s landscape of the area, with a view of Croagh Patrick, was painted about half a mile from Westport Lodge around the time the Lodge was built.
