Who is Stephen Gooden?

George Moore fervently admired the English artist and engraver Stephen Gooden in the 1920s and 1930s. Gooden illustrated four published books by Moore and was tapped to illustrate a fifth (Madeleine de Lisle) when Moore died before finishing.

The copperplate engravings don’t photograph well; see the original limited edition books for a full appreciation of the art.
