George Moore attended St. Mary’s College, Oscott, near Birmingham, England, from 9 until 16 years of age (September 1861-mid 1868).
He didn’t like it. The school changed the “high-spirited child… into a frightened, blubbering little coward that begged to be taken home” (Hail and Farewell! Salve (1912), page 282).

Oscott College was also the alma mater of George Henry Moore, the novelist’s father. It was the model for John Norton’s college in A Mere Accident (1887) and Celibates (1895).
