What is the Shelbourne Hotel?

On the following day the Irish girls, under the guidance of Mr. Barton and Mrs. Scully, started for Ireland. The journey was considered fatiguing, but on arriving in Dublin, they stopped at the “Shelbourne,” where they were going to spend a few days, the girls having dresses to buy.

Thus began chapter 2 of George Moore’s A Drama In Muslin (1886). From time to time he stayed at the Shelbourne, facing St. Stephen’s Green, from 1884 until 1915.

Today, the George Moore Suite at the Shelbourne commemorates the author who “immortalized The Shelbourne in his third novel ‘A Drama in Muslin’ – a study of the prevailing social conditions of the Irish people, who were desperate for political change and growth. The suite which now bears his name is beautifully furnished with crystal chandeliers, providing a graceful and distinguished welcome for up to 22 guests.” The Shelbourne
