Who is Walter Scott?

Walter Scott, (1826-1910) was a stone mason who made his first fortune as a building contractor. At 56 he acquired a failed publisher and printer and turned it around, eventually generating a backlist of hundreds of titles.

Scott’s first edition of Moore’s The Strike at Arlingford (1893) with a cover design that became Heinemann’s standard in the early 1900s.

Scott reprinted four of George Moore’s earlier novels before becoming the first publisher of the bestseller. His titles included Ballades and Rondeaus (1887 with Moore as a contributor); A Modern Lover (1893); A Mummer’s Wife (1893); A Drama in Muslin (1893); Vain Fortune (1893, 1895); The Strike at Arlingford (1893); Modern Painting (1893, 1897); Esther Waters (1894, 1899); Impressions and Opinions (1895 announced, not seen); Celibates,(1895).

In 1907 Walter Scott was created the first Baronet of Beauclerc.
