Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a South African novelist, political activist and public intellectual. She met George Moore in the mid 1880s, after publication of her bestselling debut novel The Story of an African Farm (1883) and reading his bestseller A Mummer’s Wife (1885). He fell in love, was profoundly influenced by her progressive ideas, and they briefly enjoyed a close friendship, breaking it off when she resisted his importunities.

Olive was unmentioned by George a few years later when his revulsion over British atrocities in the Boer War became obsessive. Joseph Hone overlooked her in The Life of George Moore (1936).
