George Moore wrote from the Sackville Hotel in 1923, during the summer he published The Apostle in The Dial.

A revised version of The Apostle appeared in The Dial, June and July 1923.

The Irish musician, producer and journalist Jimmy Glover, who was a close friend of George Moore in the early 1880s, was the Mayor of Bexhill-on-Sea, 1906–1907, and managing director of the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, 1912 and 1918.
