Mike Fletcher (1889) is George Moore’s sixth novel. It was mostly set in the Temple, a neighborhood in London where he lived after leaving his beloved West Sussex at the end of 1888. Mike Fletcher was the planned counterpart to A Drama in Muslin (1886): a study of young men as the earlier story was a study of young women — all of whom were conflicted, frustrated, confused and defeated by their families and social surroundings. Characters from Spring Days (1888), A Mere Accident (1887) and A Drama in Muslin (1886) continued their stories in Mike Fletcher, forming a mini comédie humaine, but the focus is on Mike, or “Don Juan” as the author conceived him.
