Who is Mortimer Menpes?

Impenitent Author

1889, aet. 37

6.5 x 4.5 in; 16.51 x 11.43 cm

Etching

George Moore half-length.

The third portrait to serve as a frontispiece of Confessions of a Young Man. The etching was commissioned by publisher William Swan Sonnenschein based on a photograph by William Page supplied by Moore. After it had been advertised as the work of Menpes, for unknown reasons the artist asked the publisher to mask his name with a pseudonym, F. Wedd.

I gave the title “Impenitent Author” to this picture as a fair description of the author of Confessions of a Young Man.

Published in George Moore, Confessions of a Young Man (1889) as a frontispiece.
