Letters 1898

Menu of Letters of George Moore

In 1898, George Moore published his ninth novel and eighteenth book Evelyn Innes. It was part one of a duology that he continued writing later in the year. Before that, though, thanks to brisk sales of the first edition, he revised his text for a second edition a few weeks after the first, and revised again for a limited edition of 12 inscribed copies, and revised yet again in a version which he sent to the printer but did not publish or distribute (that would wait for the third edition in 1901). The changes to Evelyn Innes were largely driven by reformulation of the character Ulick Dean, modeled more and more closely on George’s friend, the poet William Butler Yeats. While advancing self-consciously towards symbolism and aestheticism in 1898, George also reconnected with the realistic novelist Émile Zola, then living in exile in England to avoid prosecution in France. George also deepened his involvement with an emerging Irish Literary Theatre.

There are 120 extant letters of George Moore from the year 1898.
