Menu of Letters of George Moore

In 1893, George Moore was 41 years old and living in London. His contributions as a cofounder of the Independent Theatre Society culminated with their production of his play, The Strike at Arlingford (March 1893). Journalistic criticism of commercial theater, that inspired his play, was paralleled by his criticism of academic art at the Royal Academy and other galleries, leading to publication of selected art criticism in Modern Paining (May 1893). Also in 1893 he midwifed the first English translation of Dostoyevsky’s novel Poor Folk (1894). Meanwhile his vocation as a novelist was somewhat in eclipse after the bankruptcy of his publisher and the tepid critical reception of his creative writing since A Mummer’s Wife (1885). But as 1893 drew to a close he revised his “Hail Mary” novel, Esther Waters (1894), which he believed was a masterpiece even before it was published. There are 99 extant letters of George Moore from the year 1893.
