In 1888 George Moore was in his mid 30s. He published a literary memoir, Confessions of a Young Man, the counterpart to Parnell and His Island a year earlier. He also published Spring Days, his pivot away from A Mere Accident a year earlier. Both novels were creative and commercial setbacks. There are 57 extant letters from the year 1888.
