Who is John Lane?

John Lane (1854-1925) and his partner Charles Elkin Matthews (1851-1921) published Volume I of The Yellow Book in April 1894. It included “The Fool’s Hour” by John Oliver Hobbes (Pearl Richards Craigie) and George Moore.

In June 1894 they published a translation by Lena Milman (Angelena Frances Milman) of Poor Folk, a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It included a Preface by George Moore.

Pearl and Lena were both romantically involved with George around this time.
