George Moore wrote from Kirkstall Grange in 1904. The estate was owned by the eminent banker Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe, who died the following year. His nephew Ernest William Beckett, 2nd Baron Grimthorpe (born Ernest William Beckett-Denison) was George’s contemporary; he inherited the estate in 1905.
