Une Académie de Peinture

1876, aet. 24
Oil on canvas
Captioned Une Académie de Peinture. Salon de 1876. P.V.. Printed below the picture Peint par R. Julian. 123. Photographié para Goupil & Cie. Printed at the bottom of the sheet Publié par Goupil & Cie, Éditeurs. Paris, Londres, Berlin, La Haye, New York.
The interior of Julian’s studio during a life class. George Moore in the middle ground slightly right of center, half-length in profile turned to his right, looking at his right hand raised to his easel. His curled hair, receding chin and sloping shoulders agree with contemporary photographs. His prominent position corresponds with autobiographical accounts of his close friendship with Julian.
A platform is in the foreground; on the left side a nude female model in profile is seated on a valise near a tea service. Thirty-one male and female students (including Moore) are painting her. The man with long hair and beard, right of center in the farthest background, is Lewis Welden Hawkins (1849-1910), Moore’s flatmate and fellow student at l’Académie Julian. His identity was confirmed by Jacqueline Hawkins for curators of the Louvre who shared this image with me. I interviewed Ms. Hawkins on the telephone but do not have notes.
A photographic reproduction of the picture was published by Goupil & Cie recording Salon entry 123 [?] in 1876. A copy is marked by Mlle. Jacqueline Hawkins in the archives of the Louvre, Paris. Present whereabouts of the painting unknown.
