What is the Imperial Hotel?

George Moore wrote from the historic Imperial Hotel, overlooking the Mall in Castlebar, on 13 July 1905. By then the hotel had changed names from Daly’s (as pictured above) to Imperial.

This site is resonant with Moore family history. George’s granduncle John Moore (1763-1799) was briefly President of the rebellious Province of Connacht, in Castlebar, before his untimely death in British government custody.

About 50 years after George’s stay at the Imperial Hotel, granduncle John was reburied in a corner of the town green, known as the Mall, that fronts the hotel.
