Who is Mary Hunter?

Mary Smyth Hunter (Mrs. Charles Hunter), dated 1904 and signed by John Singer Sargent (see Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester)

Mary Symth Hunter (1856-1933) was a prominent hostess and patron of the arts. Starting in the 1890s, George Moore was her dear friend and frequent house guest at Selaby Hall and later at Hill Hall.

George dedicated the first edition of his play The Apostle to Mary, crediting her with a spark in 1899 that led led him to write first The Apostle (1911) and later The Brook Kerith (1916).
