When George Moore arrived in Paris in March 1873 to study art, he checked into the Hôtel du Quai Voltaire at 19 Quai Voltaire near the Louvre (above). Soon he moved to the Grand Hôtel de Russie, 2 Boulevard des Italiens (below), where he wrote a letter to his mother. “I must be gay the carnival is over the old king is dead.” (National Library of Ireland)

Lacking vintage photographs of these hotels, I offer contemporary shots as placeholders. The hotel exteriors may be unchanged since Moore stayed in them.
