Katherine Harris Bradley (1846–1914) and her niece Edith Emma Cooper (1862–1913) were poets, playwrights, memoirists, disciples of Walter Pater, writing under the combined pseudonym of Michael Field.

They met George Moore in 1890 and recorded a nuanced, intrigued impression of him in their journal. He became their friend, reviewed their work, shared their aestheticism; it may be said that they echoed his experiment in poetic drama in his play Martin Luther (1879) ten years before they met.
