Evelyn Innes (1898) is George Moore’s ninth novel. At more than 180,000 words, it is his longest to date, yet it’s only part one of a duology; part two is Sister Teresa (1901).
The novel’s eponymous main protagonist is a musical prodigy who lives with her widowed father in the London suburb of Dulwich. Mr. Innes makes and restores archaic instruments and leads a church choir that promotes the revival of ancient choral music, particularly that of Palestrina. Evelyn plays the viola da gamba in her father’s public concerts and has a remarkable though untrained singing voice. She infatuates a wealthy patron of the arts, Sir Owen Asher, Bart., who becomes the sponsor of her vocal training in Paris, the catalyst of her career in Wagnerian opera, and her lover. A younger man, the Irish composer Ulick Dean, eventually inspires Evelyn with artistic ideals and bumps Owen Asher from her affections. Eventually both Owen and Ulick are eclipsed by religious beliefs and aspirations, as Evelyn struggles to reconcile her self-indulgent lifestyle with her conscience.
In addition to telling a dramatic story in this novel, George unpacked his enthusiasm for music and understanding of the Roman Catholic Church, both of which fill numerous detailed digressions in the narrative arc.
