Esther Waters (1894) is George Moore’s eighth novel; at more than 140,000 words, it’s one of his longest and most complex. It relates the saga of Esther Waters, a religious but uneducated and impoverished young woman, to eke out a subsistence living while overcoming the stiff challenges of unplanned pregnancy and single parenting.
Esther’s story is set in several parts of London and the author’s beloved West Sussex (also the scene of several earlier novels). A large cast of characters is headed by the working-class Waters family, the nouveau-riche Barfield family, the entrepreneurial William Latch, the evangelical Fred Parsons and the rudderless Sarah Tucker. They form a threatened and threatening human vortex that Esther navigates to preserve her dignity and her son’s life.
While unfolding its human drama, Esther Waters foregrounds the culture and economics of horse racing and gambling addiction in Victorian England.
