A Pleasant Walk

Circa 1906, aet. 54

Ink, graphite, watercolor on paper

On letterhead of Nevill Holt, Market Harboro . Inscribed Nancy takes G.M. for a pleasant walk. George Moore is full-length in profile, turned to his right, holding a hat in his right hand, with an annoyed expression as he looks at the muddy path in front of him. The young Nancy Cunard, beyond the path by a picket fence, urges him forward.

Nevill Holt Hall was the home of Sir Bache and Lady Maud Cunard until they separated in 1911, and the birthplace of her daughter Nancy in 1896. I dated the undated picture to Nancy’s apparent age of 10.

Published in Nancy Cunard, GM. Memories of George Moore (1956). Owned by the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin, USA.
