The Aptness of His Retorts

1924, aet. 72

In on paper

Captioned Mr. George Moore, in converse with Mr. Bernard Shaw, Dean Inge, Mr. Hilaire Belloc and Mr. Hall Caine, is seen reducing them all to baffled silence by the aptness of his retorts. Signed Will Dyson. Full-length in profile turned to his right, sitting at a writing table, using a typewriter; a cat on his lap and tea service on the table. A burning fireplace in the background, the mantle adorned with pictures of women, a pair of lady’s shoes, and a ceramic captioned “Souvenir Margate”. A caricature of Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergèreon hangs on the wall.

Published in the London Mercury (June 1924). Present whereabouts unknown.
