The Irish author, editor and publisher Edmund Downey (1856-1937) was working for William Tinsley in 1883 when Tinsley published Downey’s first collection of stories Anchor-Watch Yarns and George Moore’s first novel A Modern Lover.
A few years later, the partnership of Edmund Downey and American author Osbert Dudley Ward (1857–1949) published Moore’s sixth novel Mike Fletcher (1889, reissued 1899). Their London-based firm specialized in Irish writers.
