What is Chirk Castle?

George Moore wrote from Chirk Castle 1913-1920. The 13th century fortress was the leased home of George’s friend Lord Howard de Walden, who was a patron of Welsh cultural heritage (among other things).

Lord Howard de Walden by Spy (Leslie Ward) in Vanity Fair, 17 May 1906. Captioned: “He patronises Literature and the Turf, but does not waste his money.” (see National Portrait Gallery, London)
