Inscribed l.l. in pencil: E.520; l.l. in pencil: [erased numbers & letters]; l.c. in pencil: moa; l.r. in pencil: Mary Cassatt / R.H.; verso l.c. stamped in ink: RH [encircled]. A framed study for etchings of a similar pose. George Moore with a full beard is half-length seated in an upholstered armchair, turned to his left, both hands resting on his lap and holding an object (a newspaper?).

Inscribed on the sheet (verso), l.r. along bottom edge of sheet stamped in red ink: ATÉLIER \ ED. DEGAS [in oval]. First state: drawn in soft-ground outlines on unevenly toned background. George Moore with full beard, half-length turned to his right, seated in an upholstered armchair. The left hand holding a document (newspaper?). First state with features more distinctly drawn.
