George Moore wrote from Boodle’s in 1895-1896, after writing Celibates. In the spring of 1895 he became embroiled in a public controversy involving Sir William Eden and James McNeill Whistler.
George may have been nominated for membership in the club by his friend Sir William; and he may have stopped coming when Sir William left in a huff after a headwaiter’s admonition to dress formally for dinner. Anyway George’s departure coincided with his move to a nicer apartment in Victoria Street, when his needs for a gentlemen’s club were less.
