A Mere Accident (1887) is George Moore’s fourth novel. It is mostly set in the coastal countryside near Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, where George Moore lived when he wrote the novel (and dedicated it to his Sussex friends). The novel relates the agon of John Norton, a conscientious and pragmatic young man of property questioning the meaning of his life. After a randomly tragic denouement, his role as the author’s alter ego continued in other stories.
