George Moore wrote to his mother from this address in the spring of 1889. At that time Bottin listed the offices of Marc de Rossieny, proprietor of several women’s magazines, and an art dealer named Michel at No. 40.
The rue Laffitte was home to several art dealers at this time including Durand-Ruel (No. 18) and Wildenstein (No. 56). It was also the residence (No. 19) and bank (No. 21) of Baron Edmond de Rothschild.
GM’s first article of art criticism, “Half-A-Dozen Enthusiasts” (25 May 1886) is a review of an impressionist exhibition in the ”rue LaFayette,” probably a misprint for Laffitte. In April 1889 he published art criticism entitled “Le Rêve” in the St. James’s Gazette.
In chapter 6 Vale (1914) he recollected staying at Durand-Ruel’s house with Mary Cassatt.
