Across the street from the South Kensington underground station, near the corner of Cromwell Place, this was the Moore family residence from 1868, when George Henry Moore reentered Parliament, until 1876 (according to Kelly’s Post Office Directory) or 1877 (according to Maurice Moore).

In 1870, the year of his father’s untimely death, the 18 year old budding artist George Moore was listed as the ratepayer. He attended the local West London School of Art and other art classes while living here, before moving to Paris to continue his education. He described the neighborhood in his story “Dried Fruit” in the Court and Society Review (7 December 1885).

Originally developed as part of the Alexander Estate, Alfred Place West was later renamed Thurloe Street. This monochrome photograph circa 1974 is colorized in Photoshop.
