28 July 1899 to Edward Martyn

Menu of Letters 1899

Aet. 47, to an Irish playwright and philanthropist. The summer of 1899 was one of the hottest on record in Britain and the continent.

The Bayreuther Festspiele, to which George Moore and Edward Martyn traveled, spanned the month of August. Schults (Schulz, Schultz, Schultze, Schulz-Curtius) was a local travel agent in Bayreuth.

The trip was was recollected in Hail and Farewell! Ave, Chapters 5-8. On the way the two old friends stopped in Aix-la-Chapelle, Maintz, Boppart, Nuremburg and Rothenburg. At Bayreuth their rooms were clean and baautifully situated in an outlying hotel, possibly a villa or pension in St. Johannis or near the Eremitage.

After the Festival they visited Munich to hear sacred music, and Antwerp to view art by Rubens. Martyn then returned home and George joined English artists Clara Christian and Ethel Walker on a tour of Holland.
