George admitted in “Since the Elizabethans” (Cosmopolis, October 1896) that “moderation — I use the word as synonymous with materialism.”

William Archer’s letter in the Daily Chronicle (26 January 1899) was a broad attack on George’s enthusiasms and opinions. It caricatured George as a man whose narrow limitations and irregular intensities constrained the wider purview of literary criticism. “When I consider the similarity of Mr. Bernard Shaw’s processes to Mr. Moore’s, I begin to wonder whether there be not, after all, something in race.”
