Aet. 47, to an Irish poet and playwright. The play discussed in this letter is George Moore’s The Bending of the Bough, a revision with W. B. Yeats of Edward Martyn’s manuscript play (later published), The Tale of a Town.
The discussion of a five-act play refers to work-in-progress; the final draft was three acts.
The play was produced for the Irish Literary Theatre at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre on 20 February 1900; publication as a book by T. Fisher Unwin in London followed on 21 February 1900.
