Aet. 48, to a London publisher. This letter concerned the forthcoming third edition of Evelyn Innes and first edition of Sister Teresa, both to be published by Unwin in July 1901.
The publisher “who is hardly solvent” was probably Appleton, whom Unwin had arranged to publish the American first edition of Evelyn Innes; Appleton apparently expected to publish Sister Teresa as well.
The second, third and fourth editions of Evelyn Innes were not published in the United States. The first American edition of Sister Teresa was published by Lippincott in a deal negotiated by George Moore rather than Unwin.
George’s rejection to Appleton at this time was caused by their expurgation of the first American edition of Evelyn Innes. Their financial condition was stable though weaker than in years past. They resumed publishing for him in 1906 with his novel The Lake.
