1900-02-27 to Edward Martyn

Menu of Letters 1900

Aet. 48, to an Irish playwright and philanthropist. Around this time W. B. Yeats, in a letter to Lady Gregory (31 January 1900), noted that George Moore and Edward Martyn were barely on speaking terms. At one point George proposed Edward’s dismissal from the Irish Literary Theatre.

A paragraph announcing Edward’s intention to publish The Tale of a Town has not been indentified. The Bending of the Bough was reviewed in the Pall Mall Gazette (22 February 1900): “The author of Parnell and His Island has made the amends handsomely.”

T. Fisher Unwin published The Tale of a Town in 1902 with Edward’s note: ’’There was an adaptation of The Tale of a Town called The Bending of the Bough made by Mr. George Moore, with my consent, for the Irish Literary Theatre performances in 1900.”
