Aet. 47, to his brother, an officer in the Connaught Rangers deployed in the Transvaal for the Second Boer War. George Moore’s distress stemmed from the immorality of fighting between colonial European settlers and danger to Maurice. He did not evince concerns about native Black Africans.
The Lucans were a Mayo family with deep roots in military service. George Charles Bingham, 4th Earl of Lucan, a Liberal Unionist peer in the House of Lords, supported the British war effort.
After the premier of The Bending of the Bough at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, on 20 February and publication of the book on 21 February, a celebratory luncheon for the Irish Literary Theatre was hosted by the National Literary Society at the Gresham Hotel on 22 February. In his speech, George Moore announced his intention to sponsor Irish language tutelage for his nephews, the sons of Maurice and Evelyn Moore. Max Beerbohm, who was present, left an amusing account of the event in “George Moore,” Atlantic Monthly (December 1950).
Annina Kenny (1879–1953) was an English-born Irish nationalist who gave Irish language instruction; she is not known for tutoring Maurice’s sons. She became a notable labor and women’s rights activist.
