1899-10-20 to William Butler Yeats

Menu of Letters 1899

Aet. 47, to an Irish poet and playwright. This letter concerns revisions of a manuscript play by Edward Martyn. My dating of the letter is speculative.

In July 1899, Edward asked George Moore to read his new play The Tale of a Town for the Irish Literary Theatre. Efforts to improve the draft were made in August during their trip to Bayreuth and later at Edward’s home in Ireland, where Yeats also got involved. This letter reflects their editorial efforts.

Around this time Yeats and George also agreed to dramatize the legend of Diarmuid and Grania.
