1898-10-29 to Édouard Dujardin

Menu of Letters 1898

Aet. 46, to a French man of letters. Because of the collapse of his magazine La Revue Indépendante, the failures of his marriage to Maria Grabowska and various investments, and as the result of his contrarian support for Alfred Dreyfus before the scandal broke, Dujardin was financially underwater in October 1898.

At the same time, the Irish agrarian economy for absentee landlords like George Moore constrained rental income and made it difficult to liquidate assets. He was not impoverished, but neither was he able to lend money to his friend.
