Aet. 46, to a French man of letters, husband from 1893 until 1904 of Germaine Marie Élisabeth Pichot, a translator, journalist, and salon figure associated with the Revue wagnérienne and Symbolist movement.

On the day before this letter, Lieutenant-Colonel Hubert-Joseph Henry, an accuser of Alfred Dreyfus, committed suicide after confessing that he forged evidence. George Moore read the sensational news in the newspapers.
