1898-02-14 to Maud Burke Cunard

Menu of Letters 1898

Aet. 45, to an American heiress, now a British aristocrat. The proof was of George Moore’s novel Evelyn Innes.

This is the only letter from George to Maud found outside the bequest of her letters to Sacheverell Sitwell. I purchased it from London dealer Winifred Myers, who was not permitted to reveal its provenance.

A signed autograph letter from Lady Cunard to Sir Shane Leslie (son of Leonie Jerome Leslie), circa September 1945 on Dorchester Hotel stationary, was (and still is) attached to this letter:

Dear Shane — It was sweet of you to write about G.M.’s letters but alas I can’t show them to you as they are now in a bank far away, and also I don’t want them published for I can’t bear my name to be in print now or even later on — It was so kind of you to suggest editing them and I know how brilliantly you would accomplish that, but alas I can’t change my nature and therefore must refuse you my [sic] kind offer — I hope soon to see you — will you dine Wed – September 5th – at 8:30? I hope to see you and again thank you —

Yrs ever —  Emerald.

During her residence at the Dorchester, 5 September fell on a Wednesday only in 1945.
