Aet. 45, to a London publisher. Carter’s Little Liver Pills was a patent medicine marketed in Britain by John Morgan Richards, father of George Moore’s estwhile girlfriend Mrs. Pearl Craigie. The pills were advertised in Unwin’s Cosmopolis magazine; Mrs. Craigie’s books had been published by Unwin since 1891.
Heinrich Felbermann claimed in Memoirs of a Cosmopolitan (1936), pages 142-143, that Richards negotiated advertising contracts with publishers who supported his daughter’s writing, including a kickback scheme to subsidize her compensation.
