Aet. 45, to a woman of letters. The return address of this letter was a private home in 1897. George Moore’s description of Bayreuth here was was echoed in Chapter 7 of Hail and Farewell! Ave (1911).
In 1897, Parsifal and the The Ring of the Nibelung were performed at the Bayreuth Festival.
Elisabeth is a character in Tannhäuser, Kundry is a character in Parsifal. George Moore’s heroine Evelyn Innes interpreted her own life through her performance of Elisabeth; see Evelyn Innes (1898), Chapter 15.
In the same novel (pages 190-191), George’s criticism of Parsifal was voiced by Ulick Dean, a character based on W. B. Yeats.
