Aet. 45, to an Irish playwright, activist and philanthropist. This journey to Bayreuth and another with Edward Martyn in August 1899 were recollected by George Moore in Chapters 5-8 of Hail and Farewell! Ave (1911).
Martyn’s two-act drama Maeve was a parable of modern Ireland. It was published with The Heather Field in January 1899 and acted, along with The Bending of the Bough, at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre in February 1900. W.B. Yeats recalled in Dramatis Personae (1936) that Maeve was edited in manuscript by George Moore and Arthur Symons.
