Aet. 44, to a man of letters whose Critical Kit-Kats came out earlier in 1896; it included twelve essays about literary figures Gosse knew personally. The dust up with Andrew Lang was over his criticism in “At the Sign of the Ship,” Longman’s Magazine (December 1896, pages 196-200) of George Moore’s article in Cosmopolis, “Since the Elizabethans.”
