Menu of Letters 1896

Aet. 44, to a woman of letters. Ibsen’s Little Eyolf in William Archer’s translation opened 23 November 1896 for five matinée performances at the Avenue Theatre. Elizabeth Robins, Janet Achurch and Mrs. Patrick Campbell were in the cast. Robert Hichens attended with George Moore, later recalling that “a crippled child was drowned and the crutch it had carried was found floating. Afterwards we discussed it, and George Moore asked me whether I had noticed that the whole play really centred round one main question. I said that I had not noticed this, and asked what the questions was. ‘Why didn’t they have a nurse?’ he answered.” Yesterday (1947, page 93).
