Aet. 42, to a woman of letters whose translations of works by Turgenev had been recommended by George Moore to the Fortnightly Review. They were eclipsed by Constance Garnett’s popular translations.
Lena’s translation of Richard Wagner’s Jesus von Nazareth (1848-1849) enabled George to write “Wagner’s ‘Jesus of Nazareth’” (1897) and conceive his own revisionist portraits of Jesus: two plays The Apostle (1911) and The Passing of the Essenes (1930), and a novel The Brook Kerith (1916).
George’s story “John Norton” was published in Celibates in June 1895. It was a do-over of his novel A Mere Accident (1887); the character of John Norton also had cameos in other novels of the 1880s-1890s.
George’s need for information about convent life was for his forthcoming duology Evelyn Innes (1898) and Sister Theresa (1901).
