The gossip mentioned in this letter reached New York, where the Critic (24 August 1895) reported: “Mrs. Craigie and Mr. Moore have been engaged in literary collaboration for some time past, and it will not be a surprise to those who know them that their intellectual friendship has ripened into something stronger.”

“I am too much interested in other people’s wives” refers to his affair with Lady Cunard.
